A Bridge-type CMM uses three moving elements that translate isostatically via pneumo-static bearings along as many rails perpendicular to each other.

The measuring probe is attached to the quillelement, which translates vertically with respect to the head element. The latter translates horizontally with respect to the crossheadelement, which, in turn, is supported by two uprights placed at its ends and translates horizontally with respect to the cast iron base plane.
